Museum Overview

From September 11 to November 1, 2026, the Tannerie contemporary art gallery invites you to come and discover the exhibition "in the wake of the Big Cheese".

The exhibition "In the Wake of the Big Cheese" tells the story of a painting, a journey, and above all, a rediscovered memory. It is the story of Philip Orenstein, a Jewish child born in Paris in 1938, who, along with his brother Stephen, five years his senior, was hidden with a family in Houdan during the Occupation. After the war, the Orenstein family left France for the United States in 1949, crossing the Atlantic aboard the ocean liner Île-de-France.

Having become an artist, Philip Orenstein immortalized this pivotal moment in a significant work, which he gifted to the town of Houdan. It is this restored painting that is on display at La Tannerie, alongside works by the artists of Regard Parole.

An opening reception is planned for Sunday, September 13th, starting at 11 a.m.
The artist Philip Orenstein will be coming from the United States and will be present from 11 a.m. to 13 p.m.

The closing event will take place on Sunday, November 1st at 16 p.m. with 'Polyphony for Palestine', featuring music and a collective reading.
